Wimal Jayawardane of Kiribathgoda the great artisan started his career in 1950 at Aesthetic University. He designed his first wedding poruwa for his elder brothers wedding ceremony. From that auspicious beginning he has designed more than 1000 wedding poruwas to date.
He design not only wedding poruwa but pirith mandapa, traditional murthi, teledramas, films and stage plays. He also designs stage decorations and back drops of elegance and creativity. For the last 10 years he was the creator behind the stage provided for Sumathi Tele Awards. |
The film “Retract from Burma” produced in America has the backdrops designed by him. He started his career as a school teacher in Thurstan College and also a craftsman in clay work, handicraft and photography for which he hold diplomas in relevant fields.
Wimal Jayawardane is Sri Lanka’s leading and talented craftsman in design of wedding poruwa. Leading batsman like Sanath Jayasuriya and also the popular film stars in the film industry has engaged him in their wedding poruwa and related accessories for their weddings. Without any racial bias he has designed elegant creations to suite the cultural identities of Sinhala, Hindu and Muslim communities. He also provides dancing groups and girls to recite jayamangala gatha at wedding ceremonies.
Most of the pirith mandapa and seela mandapa designs since 1970 are creations of this great artisan.
